USPS Ground Advantage is usually cheapest under a few pounds; Flat Rate wins on heavy small boxes; FedEx Ground scales past 25 lb.
02
Rates round up to the tier — the calculator does the same, so a 4.2 oz envelope shows the 8 oz price.
03
Zone 1 is local, zone 8 is coast to coast. Find the zone for a destination ZIP on your carrier's lookup.

FedEx Ground adds $6.45 for residential stops. Commercial addresses and drop-offs skip it.
USPS Ground Advantage (retail rates from Notice 123, effective July 13, 2026), USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate (Jan 2026) and FedEx Ground list rates (2026). UPS static tables aren't published the same way, so UPS isn't included yet — live carrier rates are on the roadmap. Until then the calculator shows what USPS and FedEx cost at the same weight and zone.
Ground rates scale with distance. Zone 1–2 is local, zone 8 is coast to coast, and every zone in between sits somewhere in the price curve. The zone lookup on your carrier's site or label provider tells you the exact zone for a destination ZIP.
Both USPS and FedEx round up to the next rate point. A 4.2 oz envelope pays the 8 oz rate, and a 1.1 lb box pays the 2 lb rate. This calculator rounds the same way — what you see is what the counter would charge.
FedEx Ground shows the $6.45 residential delivery surcharge when you toggle it on; commercial addresses skip it. Fuel surcharges move weekly and are not in static tables. USPS rates never include fuel surcharges — postal rates are set by the Postal Regulatory Commission.
Carriers charge the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight. FedEx uses the length×width×height ÷ 139 formula. A big, light box — like a pillow or poster — can bill at a much higher DIM weight than its scale weight, which is why oversized light items are costly to ship.
No. These are retail list rates. Pirate Ship, ShipStation, Shippo and similar providers get commercial rates that are typically 20–40% cheaper than the counter price. Use this calculator to compare carriers and predict the worst case — then buy your label through a provider.
